PARISH NURSE PROGRAM - Lower Columbia Region. Variable shift, & 0800-1700 & m-s & 20 hours per week. & This position is salaried and therefore exempt from overtime pay. & Open 4/13/2005. $17.49 per hour minimum. & $26.23 per hour maximum. Position will provide leadership in identifying and responding to the health-related needs of the members of the congregation of New Life fellowship.
JOB SUMMARY

This will be provided through leadership in identifying and responding to the health-related needs of the members of the congregation of the assigned parish.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Promotes the St. John Medical Center and the assigned church’s Mission and Philosophy statements through action, word and behavior.
· Serves as a health minister to individual congregants, parish staff and community members.
· Acts as a visitation health minister to the hospitalized, the homebound and the nursing home residents as assigned by the individual churches.
· Promotes an understanding of the relationship between lifestyles, attitudes, faith and well-being through such activities as classes, seminars, support groups, health fairs and educational materials.
· Serves as a resource and demonstrates knowledge of community services and agencies in order to make appropriate referrals.
· Serves as a liaison between parishioners and community agencies when needed.
· Recruits and coordinates volunteers who provide support to parishioners in identified areas of need.
· Understands safety precautions as they pertain to the assigned church.
· Provides for patient privacy, exercise discretion and assures confidentiality at all times when discussing matters concerning clients.
· Acts as the patient advocate as necessary to facilitate health care goals by reviewing, understanding, and communicating patient needs, strengths and weaknesses to the pastoral care team.
· Is aware of own responsibilities; professionally, ethically and legally (ie knowledge of Nurse Practice Act, ethical behavior with patients/doctors, demonstrates understanding of professional legal ramifications for both self and patient care).
· Practices cost-effective use of supplies and staff resources. Exercises restraint in conducting personal/social business within the work setting.
· Demonstrates the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate individual’s care appropriate to his/her age by demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
· Reports positive or negative changes regarding an individual’s condition to the appropriate person.
· Understands and implements the principles of patient education.
· Maintains appropriate records and statistical data necessary to document the functions and activities of the parish nurse.
· Functions as an active member of the parish staff.
· Coordinates a health ministry commission/team which serves as a resource in defining and evaluating the parish nurse’s activities.
· Promotes a safety-conscious work force and maintains good housekeeping practices.
· Does not provide hands on care, in or out of the hospital, except for blood pressure screenings which is provided as a disease prevention and follow up program in churches and the community.
· Communicates appropriately with the person served regardless of their age.
· Performs other duties as required or assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
Required qualifications:
· Licensed in the State of Washington as a Registered Nurse
· 3-5 years nursing experience
· Ability to understand and communicate the concepts of the inter-relatedness of body, mind and spirit to health and wellness including religious mission and faith tradition of the assigned parish.
· Understanding of, and commitment to, the church’s vital mission in fostering wellness in today’s society.
· Good communication, interpersonal and caring skills.
Preferred qualifications:
· Medical/surgical and/or community health nursing experience
· Certified Registered Parish Nurse
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS
Required: High School or equivalent
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Current Washington or Oregon State Driver’s License
Introduction to Parish Nurse class completed within 6 months of employment
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Frequent challenging and high paced working situations. Potential for occasional exposure to blood borne pathogens, biologicals and violent behavior. Could include some repetitive finger and wrist motions, exposure to computer screen.
