St. Mary’s a 86-bed acute care hospital is part of Catholic Health Initiatives system based in Denver, Colorado. The healthcare center is Pierre’s second largest private employer with 475 employees. In 2000, St. Mary’s invested $12.5 million into a major building addition to upgrade its services for patients in the emergency room, same day surgery, and operating rooms. Another $12 million building addition was completed in 2004 to house transitional care, kidney dialysis and rehabilitation.
