Stress is not always a bad thing. Stress can occur from situations in our life that we may categories as “good” or “bad”. Stress is simply your body’s body of responding to a particular situation, but learning how to manage stress appropriately is very important.

First of all, we need to recognize and accept that our lives will never be 100% stress free. Not only is this not possible, but our daily experiences would be quite boring without any type of stress. So, what are some easy techniques that we can use to reduce the stressors in our life?

1. Exercise: Now, you don’t have to be a marathon runner or super fit to benefit from the stress reduction effects of exercise. The general guidelines for exercise are that it should a) last at least 30 minutes b) raise your heart rate for at least 20 of the 30 minutes and c) engage in exercise at least 3 times a week

2. Manage Your Diet: Watching your waistline actually helps your body deal with stress more appropriately. Choosing foods that are high in complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables is important. And contrary to some of the “diets” out there, it is not necessary or healthy to ban most carbs from your diet. The key is to choose healthy carbohydrates or whole grains. The old saying “garbage in, garbage out” that refers to computers also stands to reason with regards to our bodies and what we put in them. Food is fuel, so choose your fuel wisely. Our moods are also affected by the foods we eat. In our brains we have certain neurotransmitters that govern our moods and these chemicals are affected by the foods we eat. Protein helps make your mind more alert whereas healthy complex carbohydrates can be calming and help with the management of insulin in your body.

3. Learning New Techniques: there are multitude of other techniques you can use to reduce your stress. Here are some more popular stress reduction techniques: a) slow deep breathing b) learning to say “no” sometimes and putting yourself first c)closing your eyes and taking a 5-10 minute nap on a lavender scented pillow d)talking with a trusted friend
e) renting a funny movie

4. Sleep – Many Americans do not get enough sleep and simply getting adequate rest will help with your ability to adapt to any stressful situation. So turn off the television early and get a good night’s sleep and you’ll be prepared to meet the next day’s challenges.
