As summer heats up it is important to learn tips for staying cool both indoors and out. Here are some healthy summer tips for inside your home so that you’ll stay cool and hydrated ruing the hot days of summer. We’ll also have an additional article about tips you can use for outdoors, but first, we’ll start with inside.
1. In your home it is helpful to close your blinds or curtains during the day, as this will keep the hot rays of the sun outside and not streaming into your living space.
2. Schedule your use of Heavy Appliances: It is useful to minimize the heat inside your home if you can use appliances such as dishwashers, hair dryers, and stoves during late evening or early morning hours. Avoid midday use if possible, and you’ll stay cooler.
3. Be aware that having extra lights on will heat up your home. Turn off lights that you are not using. This will decrease the temperature inside your home and help you feel more comfortable. Other tip: change out your light bulbs to the more energy efficient and cooler, Compact fluorescent light bulbs which emit less heat, and are longer lasting than regular bulbs.
4. Thermostat helpful hints: When you’re gone from your home, keep your thermostat to a setting that’s warmer than normal, and when you return keep the temperature no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Having your air conditioner set to run at a cooler setting when you’re not there, won’t cool your house faster, but it will increase your electricity bills.
