Accreditations:
JCAHO approved hospital. Rated one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the nation.
Community Description:
Moscow is a scenic and friendly small town rich in culture, education, and recreational opportunities. Ours is a vibrant community alive with outdoor markets, festivals, art, theatre, and music, including the world famous Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, rated as “The Number One Jazz Festival in the World.” Moscow is consistently named as one of the Best 100 Small Art Towns in America. Home to the University of Idaho and its excellent educational programs, our area boasts a young, outgoing, and highly educated population.

Gritman Medical Center is a JCAHO accredited 40-bed regional Medical Center, with the equivalent of a Level III Trauma Center under the State of Washington Trauma system, state-of-the-art technology throughout its inpatient and outpatient service areas, four rural clinics in adjacent communities, and an extensive array of community outreach programs unheard of for a Medical Center this size. Our philosophy supports our emphasis on “high tech” and also nurtures our commitment to be a Medical Center that values “high touch” patient care. Our emphasis on high tech allows our healthcare providers to stay challenged with a variety of sophisticated services and procedures, and has earned us the distinction of being one of the 100 Most-Wired Hospitals in the nation. Our emphasis on high touch allows our healthcare providers to practice caring, compassionate healthcare so important to us in this day and age, and yet missing from so many other organizations.

We are totally supportive of our community, and our staff and the area physicians join together in an excellent working relationship to provide the services our community members expect and deserve from us.

What types of specialty services does your organization provide?..
Gritman Medical Center provides an extensive range of services that are not normally found in a Medical Center this size. This includes Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation; accredited Diabetes Education Program; Sleep Disorders Center; Women’s Center with QCT Bone Mineral Densitometry, Mammography, and Sterotactic Breast Biopsy capabilities; four rural clinics; a comprehensive Occupational Health Program; an Imaging department with ACR accredited Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, helical CT, MRI, and Echocardiography; Trauma Center; Family Birth Center; Young Children & Family Program; Home Health & Hospice; Oncology and Urology Outpatient Clinics; surgical blood recovery capabilities; and a comprehensive Central Therapy Services program.

What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?
The emphasis on the type of patient care we provide, our technical capability, the extensiveness of our services, and our commitment to supporting our community create a work environment different from other organizations. This is, of course, made possible by our commitment to our employees. We are committed to recognizing and acknowledging each employee’s contribution, to providing open, candid communication, to encouraging each employee to be involved in hospital operations, and to providing a safe, supportive, and encouraging work environment. We also have a commitment to helping our professional team develop and broaden their expertise.
Also we expect our employees to have a life! We encourage employees to get out of here, go enjoy the magnificent resources of northern Idaho, and to have fun!

Can you explain the career opportunities available for new graduates in your organization?
We welcome new graduates into all of our service areas. Although we are not a teaching hospital, per se, we are a clinical rotation site for Nursing, Pharmacy, EMT, Therapy, Imaging, and Nurse Practitioner students. Our commitment to training and our emphasis on selecting the right person to work here allows us to hire new graduates and work with them to develop their skills and expertise.

What can a candidate expect during their interview process?
We use a team approach for most interviews. We want candidates to get to know the people they will be working with, and we want our employees to be part of the decision process for who we hire. We consider this a win-win and have had great success with this approach.
Candidates will also have the opportunity to tour our facilities and the community, and discuss any questions or concerns they may have in making their choice to join us. We understand that making a career move is an important decision and we want the candidates to make the decision which is best for them.

What are some common mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs with your facility?
Candidates who assume that Gritman Medical Center is just another ordinary small hospital seriously underestimate our capabilities and are missing the point of what we are about. Whether these candidates approach the selection process with a ho-hum attitude or with a holier-than-thou attitude, they are doing themselves and us a disservice and probably will not be selected.
We have experienced individuals from all over the country who have worked in all types of organizations ranging from large Level I Shock-Trauma Centers in major metropolitan areas to other small rural hospitals. All find challenges here and thrive in our work environment.

Most facilities stress only the positive aspects of working for their organization. What are some of the challenges faced by new employees and even experienced personnel?
Working in a small facility, even with the range of services we offer, is not for everyone. We think it is exciting, challenging, and rewarding to “wear a number of hats.” To be responsible for more than one function, to be cross-trained in other service areas and procedures, to be asked to actively participate in determining how care will be provided, and to be asked how we can improve what we do. This can be stimulating for some and intimidating for others. It is each individual’s decision to determine if this is the right place for her/him.
