I came to St. John's with what turned out to be a three-bug infection of my lymphedema--and I came with absolutely no insurance. Yet, my hospital stay ended up being paid for, thanks to a program they have for people like me who finally got sick of paying the high insurance rates but got suddenly caught with serious health issues.
For a little over a day, I was in a nice but very small room--but got moved into a kind of suite after that. They also took my extreme "undertallness" into consideration and got a larger bed for me.
At first, I was almost as helpless as a baby when it came to mobility. If it took six people to come in and move me, six people came in and moved me--and were as gentle as possible in doing so.
With each baby-step I took towards getting my old self back, I had cheerleaders.
As for the food, it was amazing! Nothing hospital about it (in terms of the old stereotype of hospital food). That same food could have been served to me in a restaurant with tablecloths and napkins made of linen and would have fit right in.
When I wanted an extra-warm blanket, the third-floor crew toasted one in the microwave for me.
Sadly, they no longer have an intermediate care program, so, when I became too well for the hospital, my days were limited, but they extended them as best as possible and now have me in a home health care program, which is also their treat.
Paid for: entire hospital stay with all of the trimmings; prescription meds just so long as I use vouchers and buy them at Wal-Mart; two follow-up doctor's appointments, and home health care.
Another wonderful touch is how they will say a prayer over the PA system every morning and night. What a blessed way to start and finish a day!!!
