What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?
Sterling Regional Medical Center is a smaller hospital that has the best of both worlds. It is in a rural community with all the advantages of small town living combined with the advances of a fast paced hospital. The hospital provides many opportunities for growth, as it is connected with several other facilities within the Banner Health System. The nurse to patient ratio is 1 to 4.

Can you explain the career opportunities available for new graduates in your organization?
The Sterling Regional Medical Center is always open to hiring new graduate RN’s. Moreover there is a very structured orientation program throughout the Banner Health System. This program, the “Nurse Residency Program,” runs two to three times per year. A new graduate RN comes into the system, participates in training and education, obtains knowledge and experiences in different nursing units, and is then eventually placed at one of our hospitals. Occasionally we do hire other new graduates in areas such as radiology or therapy, and a structured orientation program is available in these specialty areas as well.

What can a candidate expect during their interview process?
The candidate will have a private interview with a manager which could turn into a group interview. Position duties and details are discussed with the candidate. The organization is also discussed in more detail. There are times when the interview begins with a phone interview and can lead to a personal interview. At that time, the candidate is flown in and reimbursed for expenses.

What are some common mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs with your facility?

Once the candidate has applied, it may be a lengthy process for an interview to take place. The candidate should be forthright and honest regarding their past history. Background checks are done on the candidates that apply.

Most facilities stress only the positive aspects of working for their organization. What are some of the challenges faced by new employees and even experienced personnel?
New employees and experienced personnel must be conducive toward change. Our organization has evolved and expanded over the years.

Sterling, founded in 1881, is located in the South Platte River Valley. The area boomed during the years the Overland Trail was heavily traveled (1858-1869) but later many communities became ghost towns. Ruins and old foundations still exist throughout this area (these can best be seen along county roads and in fields).
