Description

While residents of Jefferson County still comprise our primary patient base, our services now span all of metro Denver. In 1997, Lutheran Medical Center, Saint Joseph Hospital and a physician group integrated to form Exempla Healthcare.

The diversity of care we provide today is directly linked to strategic decisions made in recent years, allowing Exempla Lutheran Medical Center to meet existing and emerging challenges including technological, financial and regulatory while still providing outstanding, quality patient care.

Lutheran Medical Center has a strong sense of community. It is the only Hospital in Jefferson County, with a huge volunteer base. Our physician groups, nursing and other employees, and our large volunteer base are responsible for the outstanding patient care provided by our facility. There is also a great feeling of family among the employees. Unlike many other institutions we have not reduced our staff as a cost-cutting measure. There is a solid commitment towards keeping as many resources as possible at the patient bedside to provide superior patient care.

Community Description:
The City of Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a community of 30,000 people in Jefferson County, just west of Denver. The city is served by Interstate highway I-70, as it curves toward the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Primarily a residential area, Wheat Ridge also has five retail centers, several unique small industries, an Enterprise Zone and more than 20 parks, equestrian trails and open space public land.

Exempla Lutheran Medical Center has a sister hospital in Denver, (Exempla St. Joseph Hospital.) Both facilities are operated by Exempla Healthcare, one of Denver's largest, not-for-profit employers.

Over 5,000 employees strong, Exempla healthcare is responsive to the needs of the community, with special concern for the underserved.

Both Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla St. Joseph Hospital have been recognized nationally as outstanding health care providers.

Exempla Lutheran Medical Center was named as one of the 100 top hospitals in the nation for 1998. This marks the fourth time in the sixth year history of the award that ELMC has ranked within the top 100.

Additionally, the Denver Mercury Awards (ranks hospitals in four categories: best overall, oncology, orthopedics, cardiology):

Exempla Lutheran Medical Center was ranked among the top three hospitals for excellence in oncology.

Our facility was also named the National Philanthropic Outstanding Business for making a difference for the people of Colorado.

What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?
As I mentioned earlier, there definitely is a strong sense of community here at the medical center. Employees work well together, and are like family. Additionally, the hospital has a long history of providing care in the community where it's needed, therefore the entire staff contributes to the overall health of our area. Staffing committees determine the shifts that are offered here. Combinations of 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts may be available to meet the demands of the census. Primarily the 8 to 10 hours shifts are available on the the medical/surgical units.

New Graduate Nurses: Can you explain the career opportunities available for new graduates in your organization?
Our medical center has the longest running nurse internship in the Denver Metro area. We offer a 9-week program where we mentor a nurse graduate into our organization. There is 1-week in classroom learning systems review and two 4-week clinical rotations with a preceptor. Not only do we provide internship programs for new graduates, but our preceptors are trained and supported on how to be a better preceptor as well. Preceptors learn how to give feedback, set goals, and learn when to step in to provide additional assistance to a new graduate. Our program has included nurses from many different countries. Graduates of the internship program may be offered a permanent position after completing the program. Our specialty training/internship programs provide orientation in Labor and Delivery, and other clinical areas.

What can a candidate expect during their interview process?
The interview starts with the recruiter and then progresses to the managers for the screening interview process. Each unit has a specific interviewing process established. If possible, interviews are scheduled so that following the initial interview, the candidate may go to the unit to interview. Unit staff all have a great deal of input into the hiring process.

What are some common mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs with your facility?
Sometimes applicants fill out the application very sloppily giving the impression that they are not taking the time to fill out the application correctly. Poor penmanship, or poor English and grammer are also sometimes seen with applicants applying for positions. In some cases, candidates have poor hygiene or do not take the time with their appearance, so it is definitely important to have a professional appearance as first impressions are important during the interviewing process.

Wheat Ridge Community Highlights:
Outstanding weather and over 300 days of sunshine in beautiful Colorado
Diverse community: easy access to Denver

Wheat Ridge may not be as fashionable as high-glitz places like Cherry Hills Village or Highlands Ranch. But Wheat Ridge has something money can't buy: a diverse community with a memory of a common past-- a place where generations of Coloradoans have lived and raised families. It's what suburbs too often aren't, but always should be: a welcoming, family-oriented neighborhood with some life to it.
More than 20 parks
Enjoy equestrian facilities, and large, open space public lands
Excellent family community
