An Interview with:    Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital
Q. Can you tell us more about your organization?
Exempla St. Joseph hospital (ESJH), is a non profit teaching facility which was started in the late 1800's by the sisters of charity in Kansas.

Known nationally as a top hospital, (we've received the nation's top 100 hospitals award four times-- most recently in 1999,) Exempla St. Joseph Hospital offers top quality services in a state of the art teaching facility.

Other awards we've received include the Denver Mercury Awards (which ranks hospitals in four categories: best overall, oncology, orthopedics, cardiology):

ESJH was ranked among the top three hospitals in Denver in each category. ESJH was Denver’s first private hospital, founded in 1873 by the Catholic Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth who made their way from Kansas to Denver with just $9.00.

Q. Describe any future expansion plans, added services or new developments for your facility?
Our orthopedics wing is presently undergoing renovations.
Q. What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?
St. Joseph's is a great place to work for many reasons. As a teaching facility we see a variety of patients, and are well known in the community as an excellent facility in which to receive care. There is a strong focus on teaching here, and the hospital has a reputation for providing outreach services in the community to help provide health care to members of the community who are in need.
Q. Can you explain the career opportunities available for new graduates in your organization?
We offer a new graduate nurse internship program three times a year: in January, June and September. Our internship consists of a nine week program, and has been in existence for over fourteen years. Classroom rotations last one week, followed by 2-4 week rotations in a designated specialty area. Interns work one on one with a preceptor, and are placed at the end of the 2nd rotation into a permanent position of their choosing. Additionally, we offer Internship programs in Labor and Delivery, Critical Care, and Perioperative Nursing. These specialty internships are designed to help nursing staff with at least 1 year of experience transition into a particular specialty area. The specialty internships consist of a six week didactic component, followed by four and one-half months months clinical time. Labor and Delivery internships are 8 weeks in length consisting of both clinical and didactic education. Our Critical Care areas: ICU/CICU: are twelve weeks of didacitic and clinical time. For more information please e-mail classens@exempla.org
Q. What can a candidate expect during their interview process?
Candidates can generally expect a call back from a nursing recruiter within 48 hours for nursing positions if they are qualified for an open position. After an initial phone screening call, an interview time will be scheduled for a follow up interview. Interviews may be conducted with both the recruiter and nurse manager, or with the nurse manager only. Acknowledgement postcards are generally sent out within the first week of our receiving an application, therefore applicants receive a notification from us that their resume was received.
Allied Health Applicants: (May take up to a week or more to receive a response from the hospital for applicants applying for Allied Health Positions.)
Q. What are some common mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs with your facility?
Applicants should make sure that their applications are filled out completely, and in as much detail as possible. Double check to make sure that the phone number you list on your application is correct, and that it is a working phone number. Qualified applicants will a phone call from a recruiter once the application has been processed. Candidates are encouraged to select a particular job that they are interested in, and to list that job on their application materials or in a cover letter.
Q. Describe the employee compensation and benefit packages available at your organization.

Q. Most facilities stress only the positive aspects of working for their organization. What are some of the challenges faced by new employees and even experienced personnel?
I think the biggest challenge right now is the cost of living in Denver. Sometimes applicants are not aware of the costs involved in living in a large metropolitan city, and the cost of living can be an issue here if one has not researched this prior to visiting the Denver area.
Q. What is the best way for a candidate to apply for a job with your facility?
