Q. Can you tell us more about your organization?

Residents of north St. Louis County have turned to Christian Hospital for their medical needs since 1903. To maintain its position as the health-care leader in the community, Christian Hospital employees and physicians participated over several months in planning and initial implementation. By way of their hard work and individual input, the hospital was able to improve the quality of care provided to the community in many ways while strengthening the facilities financial position at the same time.

Christian Hospital also plays a vital role in providing emergency care. As part of renovation efforts, the Christian Hospital Northwest Emergency Department now includes expanded and updated waiting rooms and registration areas, a new pediatric waiting area, a new treatment room, and an improved entrance area.

The modern Surgery Center opened in spring of 1997, providing north St. Louis County with convenient, high-quality inpatient and outpatient surgical services.

Q. What types of specialty services does your organization provide?..

Heart surgery, cancer services, neurosurgery, pain management, nutritional counseling and women's services.

Christian Hospital is operating one of the busiest emergency departments in the state.

The Hospital well known for its cardiology department, has a long tradidition in high-quality heart care services. During the year, physicians at Christian performe more than 5,000 heart procedures --from angioplasty to open-heart surgery. In 1981, the first open heart surgery in a community hospital in the St. Louis area was performed at Christian Hospital.

Christian Hospital's multidisciplinary heart team uses the latest in diagnostic technology, while the experienced and skilled team of cardiologists and open-heart surgeons on staff provide the latest in treatment options.

The Hospital's Cancer Care Program received a three-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons, recognizing Christian Hospital's commitment to the best cancer care available. Only 23 percent of hospital cancer programs in the United States have approved programs.

Q. What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?

BJC HealthCare is one of the largest nonprofit health-care organizations in the United States, delivering services to residents primarily in the greater St. Louis, southern Illinois and mid-Missouri regions. BJC serves rural, urban and suburban communities and includes 13 hospitals, five skilled nursing facilities, a retirement community and other community health locations. Services include inpatient and outpatient care, primary care, community health and wellness, workplace health, home health, community mental health, dental practices, long-term care and hospice, making employment available in a broad, progressive and upwardly oriented work environment.
