Part I: An In-Depth Look
An Interview with:    HaysMedicalCenter St. Anthony Campus
Q. Can you tell us more about your organization?
HaysMedicalCenter (HMC), a rural regional medical center, is faced with specific needs and responsibilities. Our mission is to help people be healthy. Delivering quality health care to patients living in rural areas poses many challenges. Distance to access health care and the elderly age of the population coupled with the reality of few physicians demands that alternative methods of delivering healthcare must be employed.

Telemedicine is a viable alternative for delivering traditional health care. HaysMedicalCenter is involved with many non-traditional modes of providing health care, all of which fall under the realm of Telemedicine. These include: teleradiology, interactive video, computer based health care delivery, remote ER coverage, consultative clinics and tele home health.

Continuing health education for professionals is another aspect of telemedicine. HaysMedicalCenter serves as a source of internally generated educational programs that are available via interactive video to other sites in Kansas. We also serve as a receiving site for programs developed through other education providers in the state.
Q. What types of specialty services does your organization provide?..
HaysMedicalCenter has a full service heart program with the guiding hand of the "father of heart surgery" Dr. Michael DeBakey. The program includes 2 full time catheterization labs, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology, and open-heart surgery and cardiac rehabilitation to meet the needs of a region where heart disease is twice the national average.

As a family-oriented birthing center, HaysMedicalCenter blends the latest in medical technology with a warm, caring atmosphere. Labor, delivery and recovery suites encourage early bonding and flexible visiting policies promote family togetherness. Hays Women's Center nurses offer education and support, both pre and postnatal, along with the personalized care every family deserves.

The Hays Cancer Center uses a team approach to comprehensive cancer care by bringing together those people and facilities necessary for such care. We provide not only for the physical needs of the patient, but also for the ongoing emotional, social, and spiritual support of the patient and the family.
Q. Describe any future expansion plans, added services or new developments for your facility?
HaysMedicalCenter has undergone numerous changes and additions. In February of 2002, trauma helicopter services will be available. We are also building a 90,000 square foot Fitness/Wellness Center that will house all of our therapies including OT and PT. An indoor pool will and gym areas are also planned and will be available to our employees and patients.
Q. What makes working in your organization different from working for other employers?
Our location, lifestyle, and work ethic adds strength to our facility's appeal. Our CEO been here for over 3 years and we have built a cultural vision mission statement to improve the lives of our patients and one another and to keep the work place a fun place to work.
Q. Can you explain the career opportunities available for new graduates in your organization?
We have a very structured orientation that lasts a minimum of 8 weeks. At the end of those eight weeks our specialty areas have begun to select the top graduates from the orientation for their particular clinical areas.
Q. What can a candidate expect during their interview process?
A phone interview with the applicant is generally step one. If there is mutual interest, a follow up personal interview and tour is scheduled. Out of town applicants are reimbursed for expenses including plane fare, bus fare, car rental, meals, and hotel accommodations. Then we give them a tour and introduce them to our staff and then we meet with them to see what they feel about staying and by then we will have made a decision also whether or not we’d like to hire them and offer them a position and will meet with them to let know our decision that day in person instead of having them and us wait.
Q. What are some common mistakes candidates make when applying for jobs with your facility?
In order to maximize the chances of being offered a position, it helps if candidates are willing to be flexible in terms of the shifts and days that they are willing to work. This becomes even more important when a new graduate is applying for a position, as many times the openinings that are available for entry level candidates may be initially open on nights or weekends. Because our hospital provides care to patients 24 hours a day--we have openings on all shifts.
Q. Describe the employee compensation and benefit packages available at your organization.

Q. Most facilities stress only the positive aspects of working for their organization. What are some of the challenges faced by new employees and even experienced personnel?
Housing is expensive and challenging to find. Furthermore, the size of the community is geared more towards families.
