Description:
It’s called “The Emerald Isle” Of Alaska.
The name evokes the glory of vibrant, green, velvet hills that wrap this gem in spring and summer. But there is also the crystalline beauty of a wintry waterfall, the pearly fog of autumn rain. Kodiak is a jewel in any season.
Rare in so many parts of our country, eagles are a common site and more than 500 have been counted within driving distance of Kodiak city. They are often seen just flying over the town as well. These eagles reign over more than 200 bird species in the archipelago, from the tiny, sweet-voiced golden crowned sparrow, to the elegant and elusive trumpeter swan. Other local animals include: squirrels, deer, mountain goat, elk, bison, snowshoe hare, beaver, river otter, red fox, short-tail weasel, little brown bat, tundra vole and of course, the Kodiak brown bear. Fin, gray, sei, minke, humpback and killer whales can easily be seen swimming through our channels in the spring and summer.
Kodiak Island is one of Alaska’s most popular hunting, fishing, kayaking, hiking and sightseeing destinations. Ocean and river fishing is by far, the most sought after sport. The scent, the sound, and the sight of the ocean are everywhere on Kodiak. We offer a temperate Pacific NW rainforest climate. Average winter temperatures vary between 25-40 degrees, summer between 55-70 degrees.
The town of Kodiak has a population of approximately 7,500 people. The total population on the island exceeds 14,000. Because our town is smaller, Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center fosters more one-on-one time with patients. This is important to us and can be reflected in our motto, “Friends and Neighbors Caring For Friends and Neighbors.”
Alaska’s largest island is called “The Emerald Isle”.....and it’s waiting for you!
