SERIES / GRADE / SALARY: *GS-602-11 - $50,964 - $63,033 Per Annum
*GS-602-12 - $61,079 - $75,542 Per Annum
*GS-602-13 - $72,641 - $89,849 Per Annum
*GS-602-14 - $83,578 - $103,909 Per Annum
*GS-602-15 - $90,338 - $114,251Per Annum
*Special rates authorized under 5 USC 5303

WHO MAY APPLY: Merit Promotion Plan candidates: Applications will be accepted from status eligibles (e.g. reinstatement eligibles and current permanent employees in the competitive Federal service) and from current permanent IHS employees in the Excepted Service who are entitled to Indian Preference.

Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP) Candidates: Applications will be accepted from individuals entitled to Indian Preference. Current permanent IHS Excepted Service employees and Competitive Service employees or Reinstatement eligible entitled to Indian Preference may also apply under the provision of the Indian Health Service Excepted Service Examining Plan.

Candidates MUST indicate whether their application is submitted under the IHS Excepted Service Examining Plan, the IHS Area Merit Promotion Plan or both.

Applications will also be accepted from non-status candidates (individuals who have never been employed by the Federal Government) and individuals eligible for non-competitive appointment (e.g. applicants eligible for appointment under the Veterans Readjustment Act, the severely handicapped, those with a 30% or more compensable service connected disability). Veterans who are preference eligibles or who have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after 3 years or more of continuous service may apply.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position serves as a staff physician in Medical Services in any one of the subsections of the Clinical Services/Ambulatory Care & Community Health (e.g., Pathology, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Radiology, etc.). Incumbent is required to perform direct patient care in their specialty area. This will involve the practice of medicine involving diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic services to patients.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet the following educational, training and licensure requirements:

Basic Requirements:

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation; or a Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a Foreign medical School which provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Comparability may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for American students who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in the foreign country.

Graduate Training Requirements: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one year internship or first (transitional) year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training in the United States or Canada. Exception: This requirement may be waived for administrative positions not requiring direct patient care.
