Longmont, CO, elevation 4,979 feet, population 76098, is a vibrant community in the northeastern corner of Boulder County, 37 miles north of Denver, 10 miles northeast of Boulder, overlooking the valley of the St. Vrain River. As the second largest city behind Boulder in Boulder County, Longmont from its origin in 1871 as a planned agricultural settlement steadily expanded into a regional, agricultural and commercial center. The city grew 38 percent in the 1990's, from 51,555 people in 1990 to 71,093 in 2000 inspired substantially by the Boulder-Longmont area's high tech manufacturing and advanced service industries. Today Longmont which retained much of its small town quality of life continues to grow at a more stable pace.
