The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is made up of 2 nearly parallel chains of islands, the Ratak (Sunrise) group and the Ralik (Sunset) group. Together, the two chains comprise 29 coral atolls, each made of many islets, and 5 islands located in the west central Pacific 2,270 miles southwest of Hawaii. RMI's nearest neighbors are Kiribati to the south and the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to the west.
Kwajalein Atoll is part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in the west central Pacific Ocean. The Marshall Islands, east of the Carolines, are divided into two chains: the western, or Ralik, group, including the Atolls Jaluit, Kwajalein, Wotho, Bikini, and Eniwetok; and the eastern, or Ratak, group, including the atolls Mili, Majuro, Maloelap, Wotje, and Likiep. The islands are of the coral-reef type and rise only a few feet above sea level.
Kwajalein Atoll is home to USAKA (United States Army Kwajalein Atoll), the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site, and about 2400 support personnel and family members on Kwajalein and Roi-Namur islands. Kwajalein Atoll covers a vast area and is the largest atoll in the world. The islets are spread apart and a person could not possibly see all the other islets from any one place. Also, today many of the islets are unpopulated, but in the past they all had people on them.
Kwajalein Atoll’s gorgeous, tropical setting in the west central Pacific offers year-round water sports and many other recreational activities. Similar to most American communities Kwajalein has schools, hospital, stores and all public works. Crime is virtually non-existent and so is traffic, private automobiles are not authorized and bicycles are the primary mode of transportation.
